Written by : Eric Deysher Photos by : Mike Geller Starting back in mid-August Umphrey's McGee and STS9 embarked on a fourteen-date, multi-city tour. The bands, each with their own large following, teamed up to attack some larger venues that they typically couldn't fill on their own. On Friday, August 30 at The Mann Center in Philadelphia , STS9 warmed up the evening, while Umphrey's brought it home with an epic performance. Sound Tribe Sector Nine hit the stage shortly after 7:30pm and got things going with a pumped up and well known trune, “Metameme”. With their groovy, yet in your face brand of tunes, they kept the energy of the evening pushing in the RAGE direction! After the first well crafted segment, the band led themselves into an all-time fan favorite tune “Breathe In” that really whipped the crowd into a frenzy. The intellectual, electronic musicians from Atlanta closed the marathon set out with a smooth version of “Wika Chikana”. Umphrey's Mcgee took to the stage just around 10pm and quickly found their footing with a fairly new yet beloved track “Gurgle” that crashed into the deadbeat anthem “Slacker”. This was just the beginning of a completely hard rock, raging and especially dancy collection of tunes that began with a slick and funky “Ocean Billy” and rocked all the way through to perhaps the most famous and hallowed UMPH anthem “All in Time”! A beautifully crafted rendition of Pink Floyds' “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” led into a excited version of “Wappy Sprayberry” which saw the evenings first sit ins. STS9s' Dave Murphy hopped on bass and Jeffree Lerner went behind the percussion rig. Umphrey's set ended with an old standby favorite “JaJunk”. The band came back after about five minutes with STS9s' drummer Zach Velmer sitting in for the usual Kris Meyers on the kit for a cool and rare Fugazi cover “Waiting Room”. Zach left the stage and Meyers retook his thrown for a final bouncy and demanding tune “Pay the Snucka” which came complete with a “Bulls on Parade” jam to end the evening on an extremely high note! Our good friends, Cocktail Party Phenomenon hosted a stellar After Party at nearby music venue, The Blockley. The high-energy set was highlighted by a 22-minute rendition of the hard-hitting "Rumblestilskin". CPP really impressed with their ability to improv and really control the energy of the show. "That was some of the craziest improv shit we've ever done!" said a very excited and enthusiastic Max young, drummer of the band. "It was a crazy show."
